GENDER IDENTITY ASSESSMENTS
What is a Gender Identity Assessment?
A gender identity assessment explores an individual’s experience of gender and any associated distress or dysphoria. The assessment may lead to a diagnosis of gender dysphoria and includes recommendations for appropriate next steps, such as access to gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), surgery, or applications for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).
Our assessments follow recognised clinical guidelines and are designed to be respectful, collaborative, and affirming, placing the individual’s wellbeing, autonomy, and informed choice at the centre of the process.
Who is it for?
We offer gender identity assessments for adults aged 18 and over (in line with UK legal requirements). Referrals are commonly made for three main reasons:
To access gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT)
To access gender-affirming surgery, including top and/or bottom surgery
To support applications for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) or medical certification
For surgical referrals, two independent clinical assessments are usually required. Clients are often referred by their GP, surgeon, or medical team.
What does the assessment involve?
The assessment process typically includes:
Two assessment sessions (2 × 50 minutes)
A comprehensive clinical interview exploring:
Mental health and emotional wellbeing
Gender history and journey
Experiences of gender euphoria and/or dysphoria
Sources of distress and support
Understanding of, and readiness for, potential medical interventions
Informed consent, expectations, and exploration of any uncertainties or concerns
Assessments are structured, guideline-led, and trauma-informed. Where clinically appropriate, outcome measures or questionnaires may be used to support the assessment.
Following the sessions, a detailed clinical report is prepared, which can be shared with the client, GP, surgeon, and relevant medical professionals as needed. Our reports are widely accepted by UK and many European providers (clients are advised to confirm acceptance with their chosen clinic or surgeon).
Follow-up Support
Ongoing therapy is not required for the assessment itself. However, we offer therapeutic support for clients who would like help exploring their gender identity, processing emotions, or navigating transition-related experiences.
